Deposits: always at the airport, often in the city

Every booking at an airport hotel is confirmed with half the fee in advance, whatever its length. In the city, the same half applies to a first booking with the house, to anything booked more than twenty-four hours ahead, to overnights, to two therapist bookings, to sessions of three hours or longer and to peak dates. The one exception is a returning guest booking an hour or two for the same day at an address in town, who pays everything at the door. For a first-time visitor the practical difference is small, since a first booking carries a deposit on either side.

Noise, neighbours and thin walls

Airport hotels are built against aircraft noise, so their walls and windows tend to be solid. Some older city buildings are the opposite: timber floors, shared stairwells and neighbours close by. None of this stops a booking, but it is one more reason the quieter oil formats are the usual choice on a first night in a room you do not yet know.

The rooms themselves

Airport hotel rooms are built for a short stay. They are usually quiet, well insulated against aircraft noise, with a practical bathroom and a bed that fills most of the floor. City hotel rooms vary far more. A room in a converted canal house may have steep stairs, low beams and a bathroom tucked into a corner; a room in a newer hotel near the Zuidas may look much like its airport cousin. Hotels near the airport sometimes describe themselves as Amsterdam hotels, and hotels on the edge of the city sometimes mention the airport in their names. If you are unsure, give the address in the first message and the reply will say which arrangement applies. The canal city and the three airport districts are reachable; the neighbouring towns are not, and the reply will tell you plainly if your address sits in one of them.

What stays the same wherever you are

The therapist decides what a session includes and says where her limits are before it starts. Everyone in the room is twenty-one or over, and she may ask to see a photo document at the door.
