Nuru massage near Amsterdam Airport, once you know the bathroom
Nuru massage uses a warm, colourless gel that makes skin glide against skin, with the therapist using her body weight rather than only her hands. It is one of the formats a first-time visitor is most curious about, and one of the few that depends on the room. The gel has to be rinsed away afterwards, which means a shower you are happy to stand in and enough time before your next commitment to use it without hurrying. In the hotels around the airport bathrooms tend to be compact and functional; in older city hotels they range from generous to barely there. The honest advice is to look at your bathroom first. If it passes, nuru is a good booking for the second or third evening of a stay, with ninety minutes rather than sixty.
Origins
Nuru takes its name from a Japanese word meaning slippery, and the format developed in Japan in the later twentieth century. The traditional gel was made from nori seaweed, which gives it a texture that stays slick without feeling oily and rinses away with warm water.
The technique
The gel is spread thinly and warmed further on the skin. Movement is mostly gliding, using the forearms, the torso and the thighs, with body weight doing the work that pressure from the hands would do in other formats. The rhythm is slow and continuous, and the contact area is large throughout.
What to expect
She arrives with the gel already warmed in an insulated bottle and a waterproof sheet that goes over the bed before anything else. The first part of the session is often a short oil or hand massage while the room reaches a comfortable temperature. Then the gel goes on, and the work becomes slower and heavier, with long sliding movements that use her forearms, torso and weight. The pace is set by her and she will say at the start where her limits sit. The final minutes are for the rinse, which is part of the booked time rather than extra to it. She takes the sheet away with her.
Who it suits
A visitor two or three nights into a stay, who has settled into the room and knows the shower works. A guest with no early start the following morning. Anyone who finds conventional pressure too pointed and wants something broader.
Benefits
Pressure spread over a large area rather than concentrated in fingertips, which many guests find more relaxing than conventional massage. The warmth of the gel helps a body that feels cold and stiff after long hours in recycled cabin air.
At your address
Nuru gel massage in airport hotel rooms by arrangement and in central Amsterdam hotel rooms, outcall only, with the waterproof sheet and the warmed gel brought by the therapist.
Length
Ninety minutes is the sensible minimum, because the rinse takes its share. Two hours gives the session room to breathe. Sixty minutes is possible but tends to feel rushed at both ends.

Questions
Asked before booking
My airport hotel room only has a small shower cubicle. Is nuru still possible?
Usually, yes, as long as the shower actually works well and there is space to stand in it. If you would rather not risk it on the first evening, book sensual or body to body tonight and nuru later in the stay.
Does the gel stain the bedding?
It should not. She lays a waterproof sheet over the bed before the gel is used and takes it away afterwards. The gel itself is water-based and rinses out of fabric easily.
Why is ninety minutes suggested and not an hour?
Because the rinse at the end comes out of the booked time. In sixty minutes that leaves the actual session short. Ninety minutes gives both parts the room they need.
